As much as we like to think that art speaks for itself, the reality is that for artists writing artist statements, biographies, press releases, brochure text, and essays is an important adjunct to your artwork.
Some artists find themselves struggling to translate their visual work into words. Others find that writing is a valuable step in their creative process.
We offer a range of writing services tailored to your needs:
Writing
Based on studio visits, interviews, and discussions about your work, we can write your biography or descriptive text for a brochure or web site. We can also write critical essays for exhibition catalogs.
Coaching
We can coach you in doing your own writing, offering suggestions for ways of approaching the writing process and feedback on your writing as it progresses. This can be particularly helpful for artist statements.
Consulting
We also offer detailed analyses of your existing writing, taking into consideration your career goals; a fresh eye can be helpful in figuring out if your writing is communicating effectively.
From Visual to Verbal: Writing the Artist's Statement
Writing an artist statement is a challenge for many artists. Yet the statement is an important opportunity often the only one for artists to communicate their ideas to gallery owners, curators, the press, and the public. In a supportive workshop environment, we will take a creative, low-stress approach to writing about our art through discussion and exercises designed to give artists ownership of the process of translating their vision from artwork to writing.
