For Artists: Web Sites

Portfolio

OVERVIEW
The web offers many opportunities for artists; a well-designed web site is a critical part of an artist's promotional package. I have designed web sites for artists and craftspeople working in a broad range of media, including painters, printmakers, sculptors, photographers, conceptual artists, furniture makers, and ceramicists.

The most effective web sites for artists put the art, not the web site, in the spotlight, providing a setting that is the digital equivalent of a gallery. The design is clean and complements the artwork, presenting it to the best advantage. Navigation is clear, so that visitors have a positive experience and can easily find what they're looking for. The site loads as quickly as possible without compromising image quality. I guide you in choosing the technology and interfaces that best enhance your artwork and your audience's experience.

DESIGN PROCESS
Each artist has specific practical issues — including audience, sales, and publicity — and aesthetic issues — color, clarity — that they are dealing with in putting their art on the web, so each site is individually designed through an interactive design process.

I do my best to work with your schedule. If you are teaching, we can schedule your project around the demands of the academic year. I can also work with artists who have specific deadlines, such as launching a site before an important exhibit or in conjunction with a job search and the CAA conference.

Studio Visit — Initial Meeting
When feasible, I start with a studio visit so that we can spend some time getting to know each other and I can see your work and get a sense of your process. Together we look at relevant sites on the web, and outline your requirements, preferences and goals. We also look at the materials in your packet. Based on our discussion, I put together a proposal.

Design and Production Phase
Once the project is defined, I develop a look and feel appropriate to your artwork and goals and begin by creating one of each type of page on the site. You have the opportunity to test out the pages and based on your feedback, the pages are revised as necessary, and then used as a basis for building the whole site.

Site Launch
When the site is built, it is uploaded to your server space and given a final testing. I can offer advice on choosing a host and a hosting plan, and can guide you through the process of securing a domain name too if necessary.

MARKETING
I offer guidance in marketing your web site, including search engine optimization and integration with your other marketing materials.

MAINTENANCE
Since it is critical to keep a web site up-to-date with your new work and news, maintenance and site expansion are available on an as-needed basis. I only maintain web sites I have had design input into, i.e. sites I have designed or for which I have done a significant redesign. I charge hourly for maintenance and site expansion, and can give you an estimate and timeframe before we begin work.
